How much does a diamond really cost?
There are many things that control the price of diamonds, from supply and demand to fashion trends and celebrity endorsements. These are things you can’t control and therefore can’t influence to get the price you want to pay. However, there are some things you’re completely in control of that affect how much you have to pay for the diamond you’ve been dreaming of.
The four major factors you’re in control of that affect how much you can expect to spend on a diamond are:
- Carat weight
- Shape
- Colour
- Origin (i.e. mined or lab-grown)
For example, with Heart In Diamond, a 0.5 carat white brilliant cut diamond costs £4,000, while a 0.5 carat yellow-green princess cut diamond costs £3,300. You can see a full breakdown of our prices here. By making your choices wisely, you can save yourself a small fortune the next time you buy diamond jewellery.
Diamond prices by carat
Here’s an overview of how much you can expect to spend on a diamond according to its carat weight, shape, colour, and origin. Save it so you can refer back to it the next time you’re jewellery shopping.
To keep things simple, each price below refers to a diamond that has an F colour rating, VS1 clarity rating, a medium fluorescence level, and a very good GIA cut grade.
0.25 carat diamond
According to the Diamond Pro, the average price for a 0.25 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond is £511. This drops down to £400 for a cushion-shaped diamond and £374 for a princess-shaped diamond.
White (also known as colourless or transparent) is generally the cheapest natural diamond colour. If you want a fancy colour, such as yellow, you can expect to pay £320-£1,877 for a 0.25 carat diamond. The price varies massively according to the intensity of the colour.
In comparison, a Heart In Diamond 0.25 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond is £2,300. We offer the same carat weight and cut in orange-yellow for £1,500 and yellow-green for £1,745. The price may be very different, but that’s because you’re getting two very different products.
When you buy a mined diamond from a highstreet manufacturer, it has no personal meaning. You can’t customise it to make it look like the diamond you’ve always dreamed of and there’s no real connection between you and the gemstone.
By purchasing a Heart In Diamond gemstone, you’re buying a unique keepsake made from the cremated ashes of a deceased loved one or pet. You’re in total control and can customise it as much as you like to make it perfect.
0.5 carat diamond
On average, a 0.5 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond costs £1,708. The average price drops down to £1,358 for a princess-shaped diamond and £1,104 for a cushion-shaped diamond.
For a 0.5 carat yellow diamond in a brilliant shape, you can expect to pay as little as £620 for a fancy light yellow diamond and as much as £1,879 for a fancy vivid yellow diamond. The fainter the colour you choose, the cheaper the final price is.
At Heart In Diamond, you can pay £4,000 for a 0.5 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond. Alternatively, the same carat and cut will cost you £2,300 for an orange-yellow diamond or £3,300 for a yellow-green diamond.
Again, the price between mined diamonds and cremation diamonds is considerable, but that’s because a lot more work goes into making cremation diamonds than it does to mine diamonds from the Earth.
0.75 carat diamond
The average price of a 0.75 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond is £3,571. At £2,710, 0.75 carat princess-shaped diamonds are cheaper, as are cushion-shaped diamonds at £2,697.
You can expect to pay as little as £1,221 for a 0.75 carat fancy light yellow diamond. However, a 0.75 carat fancy vivid yellow diamond can cost up to £8,078.
With Heart In Diamond, you can create a 0.75 cremation diamond in a brilliant shape and white colour for £6,600. The same carat weight and shape comes in at £3,300 for an orange-yellow diamond and £4,900 for a yellow-green diamond.
Our coloured diamonds are incredibly bright, eye-catching, and vibrant. If you want a vivid diamond that really stands out, our coloured diamonds work out much better value for money than mined fancy colour diamonds.
1 carat diamond
A standard 1 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond costs £8,320. A 1 carat white princess-shaped diamond is cheaper at £5,435, while a cushion-shaped diamond is cheaper still at £4,967. It’s important to remember that these prices are simply averages. How much you spend on a 1 carat diamond is greatly influenced by the quality of the cut.
The average 1 carat fancy light yellow diamond costs around £3,250. This can drop down to as little as £1,879 or go as high as £3,006. On the other hand, the average 1 carat fancy vivid yellow diamond comes in at around £7,890. This can reach highs of up to £9,394 and lows of £6,388 depending on the quality.
At Heart In Diamond, a 1 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond costs £9,850. A 1 carat brilliant-shaped diamond is £4,400 in orange-yellow and £6,195 in yellow-green.
Our diamonds are incredibly well cut and have a fantastic sparkle. This is why our white diamonds cost slightly more than average. However, our fancy coloured yellow diamonds are excellent value for money and work out much cheaper than their mined equivalents.
1.5 carat diamond
The average price of a 1.5 carat white brilliant-shaped diamond is £16,744. A 1.5 carat white cushion-cut diamond is more affordable at £15,256, while a princess-shaped diamond is even cheaper at £12,863.
A 1.5 carat fancy light yellow diamond can cost anywhere between £3,024 and £6,000, depending on the quality. However, fancy vivid yellow diamonds are much more expensive and cost between £14,553 and £26,250.
We don’t currently offer 1.5 carat white diamonds — our white diamonds only go up to 1 carat. But we do have 1.5 carat diamonds in orange-yellow for £7,495 and in yellow-green for £8,400.
As our coloured diamonds are so dazzling and excellently cut for optimum sparkle, they work out much better value for money than their mined counterparts.
Don’t forget
Diamond prices fluctuate throughout the year and go up in price the more time progresses. Other details such as the clarity of the diamond, the GIA cut grade, and fluorescence rating also influence the price.
To make things even more confusing, different manufacturers often charge different prices. A 1 carat brilliant cut white diamond may cost £2,000 from one shop and £20,000 from another shop. The important thing is to keep within your budget and get the most value out of the money you have to spend.
